CHARLOTTE PORTRAIT GROUP

FAQ's

What's the schedule like...?

For portrait sessions, we host one posture for three hours. We break up the three hours into 20-minute sessions with a 5 to 10-minute break in between. What that means is: The model gets on the stand, and sits in position for 20 mins. Then we break for 5 or 10 min. After the break, the model gets back into the same posture and models for another 20 mins. This is repeated for the 3-hour portrait session.

What can or do the artists bring?

Kevin and I arranged this class specifically for artists to take their time. We invite oil, acrylic, pastels, charcoal, clay, collage, etc. You may bring whatever inspiration calls to you. We only ask if you use spray paint or fixative, that you to use them outside. For a list of recommended supplies from Chalice, click here.

What is provided to the artsits?

We offer chairs and tv tray tables. Everything is on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you have a travel easel, we highly advise you to bring one.

What is provided for the model?

We have the model in a cushy, high-back support chair placed on a portable stand.

Is food or drink provided or allowed?

We do not serve food, but anyone can bring what they need for the three hours. Please refrain from bringing peanuts, as one of the hosts is deadly allergic to them.
We offer water, snacks, and wine. We are prohibited from selling wine, but we ask for a tip.

What can the model's wear?

We let the models (who can also be artists) pick and choose what they wear. Come as you are! We have had people dress up in cosplay, victorian attire, and more. We post about our models and a theme that they choose to dress up in so our artists can plan accordingly. Our only ask is that the costumes are not 'promiscuous'. We are clothed portrait sessions so teens can come and draw with us, and we don't want to hear any negative feedback from parents. I know that 'promiscuous' can be suggestive, but my suggestion is if you could wear it out in public, and your grandmother wouldn't tattle on you to the authorities, then you're good.

Do you host on holidays?

We do not host on holidays or near holidays. However! If there is a 5th Wednesday in the month, we use it to ensure we give our artists 4 sessions a month to practice their craft.

Do you wear masks?

We mask up as a group when the CDC mandates it. We won't mask the model since that is 50% of the face. Artists are more than welcome to come with a mask if they need to, and we do ask that if you feel under the weather, please stay home.

Why $15?

The standard rate in Charlotte, NC, for a 3-hour session is $15. Think of it as $5 an hour when the model gets paid $25 an hour for their time. You're getting a really great deal. You can find more information on the local figure and portrait sessions around in and around Charlotte at Figure Drawing Around Charlotte.
